Google Plus
Google Plus Cirlces
The intents of Google to monopolize the web world is not something Google has ever tried to hide. Every now and then, a new product is released by this Mountain View web giant. Google picks on a web industry leader and builds a similar, even better application to compete and conquer. Google+, or Google Plus, is no exception.

Goople+ (often abbreviated as G+ or +1) is a social networking service launched, after several years of hiccups and delays, in June 28, 2011 to mainly compete with Facebook. It quickly became popular among social networkers. It has now more than 400,000,000 registered users just within less than 2 years of existence. It is constantly increasing its popularity day by day.

G+ is a more natural, secure social network

More intuitive than Facebook, G+ aims, according to Vic Gundotra, vice president of engineering for Google, to develop the online sharing and make it as natural, rich and nuanced as our real world interactions. People don’t interact with everyone the same way. They tend to be more open to people they like and trust. They tend to put people into certain cirles of trust and share their very personal things accordingly. Don’t you?

Online social interaction lacked this feature before the arrival of G+. Most social networks don’t grant their users much control over access to their information and updates.

Unlike its competitor’s wall, I mean Facebook of course, where the profile updates and all postings are visible by default to all contacts, Google+ impressive interface is well built for the user to better publish the information he/she wishes to disseminate and avoid unfortunate mishaps. I believe that what stands Google out of the competition is the importance it gives to privacy. The Google+ privacy feature is centered around Circles and your ability to choose which Circles can view your information. Go through your privacy settings to understand what people are seeing from your profile and who's seeing it.

Generally speaking, Google+ is not that different from other services in terms of purpose and function. They all are used to share photos, videos and articles and keep in touch with friends online. But what makes Google+ different from the others is how technology is used and tailored to meet what users actually need to better socialize online.

In brief, Google Plus is awesome for the following features:
  • Circles: Users can see updates of their contacts from their “circles” through the "Stream" (Stream is quite similar to the "news feed" on Facebook).  They can use “Circles” to organize their followers as well as those they follow themselves. You just click a Circle in the left of the screen to set the type of contacts circle to see your posts. You can limit the amount of incoming information by clicking specific Circles. What is revolutionary in this service that other networks lack is the ability to drag contacts directly from your address book messaging, Gmail, in different circles and arrange them according to the importance of the relationship: friend, family, knowledge, other. Users can create as many "circles" that we want to bring people together in a collaborative task and a common interest. They also have the possibility to share photos, links and videos with one or more circles.
  • Real-time Stream: With Google+, no need to refresh the stream page over and over to see the new updates when posted. New postings and comments automatically show up at the top of the stream. It’s really time-saving.
  • Hangouts: Hangouts simply means hanging online with a group of friends “Circles” of your chosen through group video chat. You can chat with up to ten people at a time. You have control over who can see or hear you.  You can have secret chat with some members of the Hangout if you want to have a private talk with someone while others are talking. You can use YouTube service in your hangout. It’s an interesting feature. A member can create up to ten "Video-Bubbles".

What is Youtube?

Youtube Broadcast Youself
YouTube is a social video-sharing website where users can upload, view, comment and share video clips. No matter what kind and size of videos you want to watch or share, you can do it all on YouTube. There is a various range of videos out there. You can find entertainment, comedy, action, music, marketing, educational videos and much more.

YouTube is currently a subsidiary of the web monster Google. It was originally created in February 2005 by three former PayPal employees. In October 2006, Google, Inc took over Youtube for USD $1.65 billion.

The service, located in San Bruno, California (The United States) uses Adobe Flash technology and HTML 5 to display all kinds of videos, be they profesional or amateur.

In Youtube, you can find seasoned video-makers along with beginner ones. There are high quality videos, and unfortunately bad, tasteless, trash ones. Everyone can upload a piece of his/her own. This feature is what makes the magic of this wonderful website, it's open to you and me no matter how good you are. Youtube means that everybody can publish a video "a tube": anyone can tube, including children.

Uploading and downloading is easy, the site is all pretty self-explanatory. It is not necessary to register to view the videos. Registration is only needed if you want to upload or comment videos.

You can have your own channel and have followers if you wish. Just to make things clear, the word "tube" in Youtube is a colloquial term for TV, used since back in the early old days of television when televisions were made out of cathode-ray tubes. So when the initial owners of the service came up with the name "Youtube", they meant, I guess, "YouTV" in the sense you can have your own TV channel. I think you know now where the name came from. thanks to "Youtube", you can broadcast youself.

What is beautifull with this wonderful service is that it offers you the opportunity to make some extra bucks. If you have a very big number of views, Youtube will likely monetize your videos through a partnership program, which is a good opportunity for you to make extra money from your passion, provided your content is original. There is quite a number of success stories of ordinary people who made it and have a residual income through Youtube. I guess you've heard of the success of Korean singer Psy thanks to Youtube. He made over $ 8 Million from his hit 'Gangnam Style' which has got 2,029,411,160 views so far.

Youtube is a powerful tool for businesses. YouTube is your friendly assitant that can get your product known for almost no cost. Online videos have become a very promising marketing strategy. The majority of Internet users prefer to watch video rather than read a text. More than 2 billion videos are viewed on a daily basis. A huge number of people across the globe use youtube. It would be stupid of companies to miss and not take advantage of that.

If you are looking for cheap ways of promoting your website, your services, your business, or simply your passion, Youtube is a great way to go.

What is Twitter?

Twitter Logo
Twitter is commonly known as posting daily short burst messages, called “tweets”, to the world. What people do on twitter is called “tweeting”. When asked the question "What is Twitter?", I would always say it’s a social networking service, but truth be told Twitter is more than that. There is no clear cut definition for the service because Twitter is actually used for many purposes. So for those unfamiliar with tweeting, here is a short overview.

Twitter is a micro-blogging platform

People use to share quick updates containing a very limited number of characters, not more than 140 characters. It’s a practical fast tool for keeping people, namely friends, informed on what you are doing. Twitter is a social microblogging service that allows you answer the question "What are you up to?" by sending short messages. In fact, micro-blogging is for people who want to blog but don't have the ability or willingness to run a blog of their own. Not everyone is ready to spend countless hours building and maintaining a blog, and you may know running a website requires money, time and more importantly a lot of dedication. Sometimes, one just wants to share something simple or let’s say trivial sort of "no special plans tonight, just staying home" or "Now enjoying my coffee in Abraço Espresso". You may just need to say what's up and stop there. Indeed, Twitter, when officially went into service in March 2006, started with a short message, a short tweet by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey who said "just setting up my twttr”. This was the first tweet ever.

In fact, micro-blogging is not restricted to Twitter, it’s actually a popular feature of many social networks like Facebook where users can drop short updates in their status wall. Twitter has taken micro-blogging to a higher level; that’s why it’s said that micro-blogging has become best known thanks to Twitter.

Twitter is a Social Messaging Network

Twitter is grown into a big Social Messaging service with the ability to post brief messages (140 characters or less) so to keep in touch with your friends and quickly broadcast information about what you are doing and where you are. You can also build new friendships. Twitter allows its users to follow people and have followers themselves too.

Twitter is Amateur News Reporting

The easiness and rapidity of tweeting have made of Twitter a popular Amateur News Reporting platform. Ordinary people like you and me can be amateur, “citizen” journalists reporting and sharing anything that they think interesting about their daily life. I dare say that Twitter has become pretty muck like TV streaming ticker that we see on news channels. 24 hours/7 days non-stop of reporting. Just see BBC or CNN, or any other news station; you'll see a news ticker streaming there right at the bottom of the screen. Twitter appears to work just like that given the amount of information and updates reported every second. According to Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, tweeters (Twitter users) send an accumulative of more than 1 billion tweets every 2.5 days, over 350 million tweets every day.

Twitter has contributed a great deal to “Citizen Journalism”, and what happened during the turmoil events after the Presidential elections in Iran and the Arab Spring revolutions is good proof. Many Arab activists

Twitter is Social Media Marketing

Aware of its potentiality and reach, many use Twitter as a marketing tool to advertise their activity. This applies to companies, politicians, celebrities and so on. They use it to interact with customers, fans and followers. Stars tweet to quickly connect in a very friendly and personal way with their audience. Celebrities Like Rihanna, Gaga, Ashton Kutcher, even President Barack Obama regularly tweet their daily updates. Talking about Mr. Obama, this social platform has come in effectively handy during his Presidential campaign.

In brief, Twitter is a blend of many different things. It is about micro-blogging and instant social messaging. It is a marketing tool and a news reporting service. Twitter describe itself very well as “the fastest, simplest way to stay close to everything you care about”. You can actually see and track photos, videos and conversations at a glance. What stands Twitter out from other networks is how rapid and scan-friendly it is.

What is Facebook?

Facebook Page Interface
Facebook Page Interface

 Dude, I need your Facebook?

Face.... what? What the heck is that?!?

Don't you know what Facebook is? You have never heard about it yourself, don't worry, you're not the only one. Many are those who still don't know about this big online social tool that millions of people use to connect with each other. Facebook is the top social network site. No other social website has revolunized oneline social networking like Facebook has.

Wait a minute! What is a social network? what do you mean by "Social Networking"?

Well... Social networking existed long before the birth of the Internet! Social networking is simply the practice of expanding the number of one's social contacts. With the advent of the Internet, the term is used to refer to all the online means to link individuals together from the comfort of you home or work, actually from anywhere. It covers web applications known as "online social networking services". These applications have multiple objectives. They are used to build a network of friends, associates, and more generally groups of people with similar interests.

An online social network is a website where members register, build a personal profile and get into contact with their real and/or virtual friends. They have a "user profile" where they can share certain information with other users for different purposes.

Why do we speak about Facebook? Is it really that important? What's the point?

Oh yeah! It's very important. It's actually VERY VERY IMPORTANT because Facebook is the most dominant social network. Actually, there many social networks out there, but Facebook is number one for the time being. You can check our "Major Social Networking Websites" directory to know about the other ones, if interested.

You'd better retain it from now on and I recommend considering having an account. Almost everybody has a personal account, even kids do. Having an account seems a good idea if you feel like keeping in touch with and knowing updates of people you care about or to promote your business. Who knows! Maybe some members of your family or colleagues of yours are hanging there.

Your big brother, your sister or your parents may be using Facebook. It is used to talk you’re your friends and make new ones.

Facebook is also used to distribute information. It has become a huge rapid vehicle for transmitting information. Indeed, during the recent revolutions in the Arab countries, young protesters have used this social network to tell what was happening.

Facebook is also used by artists to promote themselves, or by politicians to be closer to the people and share ideas. Influancial political figures like Barack Obama and Nicolas Sarkozy are also present on Facebook.

On Facebook, people who are willing to share their profile are called "friends." But all these people are not real "friends" as your “real” friends are in real life; many are rather virtual "contacts" that can be turned into real if you wish especially for dating. So be very careful with the information that you share.

In addition, be careful not to spend too much time. Nowadays, it’s important to have an account there but Facebook should ris a supplement not a substitute that sucks out your real social life.

Facebook is now the most visited website in the world. Do you know that more than one billion people worldwide have a Facebook account? That's huge. So I'm pretty sure that some of your connections uses Facebook serices.

And if you're a regular Internet user, there are high chances you have heard about Facebook or seen its logo -an f embedded in a dark blue box-, or one of its LIKE buttons - a thumb up- somewhere in website. Just look up under the title of this post. Do you see a thumb up? Good! That's Facebook Like button, and just on the right is the logo. Don't forget to like this when you register ;). If you already have an account, good for you.

So how did Facebook start?

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook
Facebook started at Harvard University under the name “The Facebook” and was launched on February 4, 2004.

One evening in 2004, in his dorm room, Mark Zuckerberg, a bit shy 19-years-old computer genius, created a sort of giant facebook for the students Harvard University. Of course at the beginning, the membership of Facebook was restricted to students of Harvard. Later and just within two months, the project was expanded to other universities. In 2006, the site was so successful that it becomes open to all across the U.S.

9 years after its launching, this community site unites more than 1 billion members across the globe, an equivalent of the entire population of Europe. It is available in 76 languages.
